Mike Murphy

Mike Murphy, America's greatest athletics coach
Mike Murphy was perhaps the greatest ever American athletics coach. In the 19th century he regularly moved between university coaching roles, and success followed close behind.

He discovered a wealth of talent, and helped each man improve his technique. He also worked on improving the technical aspects of the sport - it was said he invented the crouching start.

In his final years he moved to the University of Pennsylvania, where he surrounded himself with a solid coaching team. In 1907 he hired Jimmy as a rubber (masseuse) and gradually promoted him to a point where he was coaching the cross country and freshman track teams.

He died in 1913.
